JUSTIN GIBBENS

JUSTIN GIBBENS
Trained in both Scientific Illustration and traditional Chinese painting, Justin Gibbens meticulously
renders life-size portraits of avian species found throughout the region. Imitating the conventions of
18th and 19th century zoological illustration, he stages awkward interactions which question the
science upon which these depictions are based. At times borrowing directly from Audubon's Birds of
America
, Gibbens 'further perpetuates a stylized version of natural history that is both curiously
seductive and brutally violent.'

Justin Gibbens has shown his unique works on paper throughout the Northwest, and was a recent
recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation award. Gibbens holds a BA in painting and drawing from
Central Washington University, and a Scientific Illustration Certificate from the University of
Washington.
