Then, Quite Suddenly, We Were Simply No Longer Anywhere is a series of relief paintings,
exposing Thurston's labor-intensive process. Each panel reveals a highly
textured plane, hand-carved for hours, and creates a tactile quality beneath its vibrant
painted surface. Thurston's newest body of work functions as both micro and macro;
as aerial views imitating cosmology, and as flat panels functioning as form and pattern.
Born in Portland, Oregon in 1970, Joe Thurston is a graduate of Marylhurst University.
He has shown his work regularly throughout the region, in exhibits such as Fresh
Trouble, curated by Jeff Jahn in 2005 and The Modern Zoo in 2003. This is
Thurston's first solo exhibition with the Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
