HAP TIVEY
Offsite Exhibition

September 6 - September 16, 2007

It is with great pleasure that the Elizabeth Leach Gallery presents Building White/Eclipse, a major light installation
by internationally renowned light artist, Hap Tivey. Tivey, who is based in New York, has been working with the
medium of light since the late 1960's and early 1970's, when he was associated with the Southern California "Light
and Space" movement.
This will be Tivey's first large scale light installation in Portland. Building White/Eclipse further explores the
properties of light by focusing on the concept of an eclipse, bringing "form" to this elusive medium.
The experience of the installation, as with the numerous other major installations that Tivey has created world wide,
will bring further understanding to how one perceives light as well as one's self.

Having studied for years in a Buddhist Monastary in Japan, Tivey combines this experienece with his knowlegde of
math to create new metaphorical understanding of one of the most basic and yet enigmatic properties of our basic
existence: light.
The work of Hap Tivey is included in numerous museum collections as well as private and corporate collectiuons
including the DeMenil Collection, Houston, Texas; The DIA Foundation, New York, New York; The Guggenheim
Museum in both New York, New York and Bilbao, Spain; Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York and P.S.1,
New York, New York.
