Christine Bourdette’s interest in the human condition and the dynamics of social interaction has long been a part of her sculptural practice. Often substituting animal figures or abstract forms for the human body, Bourdette hints at nonverbal communication and emotional expression. This use of “stand-ins” underlines the commonalities in each of our individual experiences. Recently, Bourdette has taken a renewed interest in the human form, most often when viewed from above, and drawing has taken a more prevalent position. Layering aspects of an abstracted landscape with her groups of interacting crowds, Bourdette’s exploration has extended into a form of mapping, observing humankind’s interactions with the landscape as another tool to be used to parse our shared psyche.

Born in Fresno, California in 1952, Christine Bourdette received her BA from Lewis and Clark College (Portland, OR) in 1974. She has shown extensively nationally, including solo exhibitions at the Fairbanks Gallery at Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR), The Tyler Museum of Art (Tyler, TX), and The Wentz Gallery at the Pacific Northwest College of Art (Portland, OR). Her work was featured in three Oregon Biennials, and she has permanent public artworks in Portland, OR; Tempe, AZ; Seattle, WA; and many others. In 1992, Bourdette was the first recipient of the Bonnie Bronson Fellowship Award. Since 1996, she has been represented by the Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
