John Beech’s artworks inhabit the space in between painting and sculpture. Utilizing recognizable shapes, and often useful objects, Beech immediately seeks to obscure that object’s purpose. Beech is interested in both addition and subtraction. Some works begin as representational photographs, and by the time Beech is done with them they have been transformed into a solid color, minimalist painting. By obfuscating an object or image’s original purpose, Beech perhaps elevates a commonplace, disdained object (such as a dumpster) into a beautiful, formal sculpture in the tradition of Donald Judd and Carl Andre. Born in Winchester, England in 1964 John Beech is now based in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been exhibited at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art (Ridgefield, CT), the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, NY), and the Sculpture Center in New York, NY. He is represented by Peter Blum Galley (New York, NY). Beech’s work will also be on view at the Portland Art Museum, June 18 - October 16, 2011.
