Robert Calvo | Silent Partner
April 4 - April 28, 2012
First Thursday Reception: April 5 2012 6-8 pm
Born in Galveston Texas, Robert Calvo studied at the Art Center College in Los Angeles, and worked at Graphics Studio in Tampa Florida. Trained early as a graphic designer, Calvo is fascinated with a variety of visual information systems such as charts, maps and cartography. Calvo's work consists of elements of mapping combined with color, symbols and grids; investigating the relationships in migration and geography and how people respond to political and natural boundaries. In Silent Partner Calvo continues to incorporate maps in his work but introduces new formal elements, resembling a private language, which are derived from cartographic symbols.
As well as twice receiving the National Endowment for Art Fellowship Award, Calvo has received the Tacoma Art Museum, Juror’s Award, and the Tampa Museum of Art Purchase Award. Calvo’s public collections and commissions include the Paul G. Allen Foundation (Seattle, WA), Microsoft (Seattle,WA), Buffalo/Niagara International Airport (Cheektowaga, NY), and Tampa International Airport (Tampa, FL).
