Shane McAdams

For Shane McAdams, the work in Scorched Earth represents his continued exploration of landscape painting. In his previous series, Micro Chasm, McAdams obscured delicate, romantic landscapes underneath elaborate web-like structures, each painting a portal between two very different worlds.

Scorched Earth likewise plays with the concepts of illusionistic and artificial space. Once again a landscape is glimpsed through an organic encroaching framework that threatens to consume the interior, sometimes bucolic, sometimes rugged, scenes. These multi-textured borders are the result of McAdams penchant for experimentation with materials: styrofoam, eroded with solvents, subjected to a blowtorch and exposed to the elements transform to create their own, albeit alien, landscapes.

Shane McAdams received his MFA from the Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) in 2004, and his work has been exhibited at the Marlborough Gallery (New York, NY), Pace Wildenstein Gallery (New York, NY), and Caren Golden Fine Art (New York, NY). He has been a regular contributor to The Brooklyn Rail since 2003. This is his second exhibition at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
