Conversation with Debbie Taylor and Greg Lulay:

July 1, 5 pm

Elizabeth Leach Gallery is pleased to present Al Taylor: Greek Studys and Test Tubes, our second solo exhibition of Taylor’s work, which will include small sculptural objects, drawings, and a selection of rarely seen prints.

In a group of wall-mounted assemblages entitled Test Tubes (1990-92), the artist characteristically recycled everyday ephemera, such as plastic bottle cap rings and metal springs to create miniature three-dimensional studies that hang encapsulated in plastic bottles. Taylor created constructions out of unconventional materials in order to open up the boundaries of the pictorial plane, allowing him to “see more.” He explored line and form by alternating between drawings and dimensional objects, each body of work informing the next. While traveling in Greece, the artist was inspired by the classical drapery folds often depicted in Greek sculpture. This prompted a series of drawings titled Greek Studys [sic] (1992-1993), in which forms are drawn in shades of red, brown, black and white, a palette reminiscent of Greek vase painting. In these drawings, Taylor explores the volume created by linear curves and the interplay between light and shadow. Throughout his career, Taylor sought to expand the perception of space by manipulating various media in idiosyncratic ways. Presented together, these two bodies of work provide insight into his methodology as well as his playful sense of humor.

Born in Springfield, Missouri, Al Taylor (1948-1999) received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1970. Taylor lived and worked in New York City and his work has been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout America and Europe, including solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Bern, the Kunstmuseum Luzern, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, Munich, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Taylor’s work can be found in many prominent public and private collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, Munich.
