Melody Owen presents a selection of photographs, collages, video, and sculpture in the exhibition
Alexandria, I’m waiting. During her recent travels to Iceland, Quebec and Paris, Owen allowed each location
to dictate her artistic practice, depending upon her experiences and the tools and materials available to her.
In Paris, Owen purchased a copy of the Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell, and while reading the book
she felt Egypt leak into her Paris experience, resulting in a series of photographs and videos. While in
Quebec, Owen lived in a small town on the St. Lawrence River, famous in the region for its tradition of
woodcarving. There, she worked with wood, creating sculptures influenced by the aquatic life and the rich
cultural heritage of the area. Impressed by the abundance of literature, and integration of myth while in
Iceland, Owen created two sets of collages from books she found there. In addition to the works on paper,
Owen will exhibit videos and photographs, which provide access to her travels, and an intimate view of
wanderlust.
Alexandria, I’m waiting is on view in concurrence with useless, incorruptible, secret, on view June 10 – July
20, 2008 in Caseworks 14 at the Reed College Library Reading Room. Owen will speak about her work at
the Reed College Theater on July 17 at 7pm.
A graduate of the MFA program at Alfred University, Melody Owen has exhibited at such locations as the
Royal College of Art in London, England, Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College in Memphis,
Tennessee, Spoonbill and Sugartown in Brooklyn, New York, the Bellevue Art Museum in Bellevue,
Washington and the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon. Owen recently completed residencies at the
Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris, France, the Gil-society in Akureyri, Iceland, and the Est-Nord-Est
Residency in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Canada.
