Al Taylor
Latin Studies

Wall constructions and works on paper
June 03 - 26, 2010
Al Taylor (1948 – 1999) created three-dimensional assemblages and drawings from ideas and images he gleaned from the world around him. Any available object could find its way into a piece, including wooden broomsticks, Formica, saw blades, and carpentry remnants. Taylor began his career as a painter, and he never entirely left behind his exploration of the two-dimensional pictorial plane. Expanding the ideas developed in his works on paper into three-dimensional constructions, and then reapplying new understanding of spatial relationships to drawings, Taylor sought to expand the possibilities of vision by creating new ways of experiencing and envisioning space. Taylor saw no distinction between his three-dimensional works and his drawings, likening his constructions to a kind of “drawing in space”. The Latin Studies series includes some of Taylor’s earliest assemblages from 1985, with related drawings, and demonstrates his humorous outlook on the world, investigating space with a mixture of whimsy and intensity. The exhibition will also include a selection of newsprint drawings from a related series entitled Wheel Studys.

Born in Springfield, Missouri, Al Taylor received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1970. Though he primarily lived and worked in New York City, Taylor exhibited widely in Europe and the United States, with solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Bern and the Kunstmuseum Luzern. Taylor’s work is in many prominent public and private collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung (Munich).
