Judy Cooke
In Touch

Paintings 2009-2010
June 03 - August 14, 2010
With In Touch Judy Cooke continues her exploration of the space between painting and sculpture, examining the physicality of art through irregular forms and visible wood panels. Recently, Cooke has been examining the ideas of the Russian Constructivists, who were interested in applying principals of abstraction and formalism to each and every thing encountered on a daily basis, using diverse and mundane materials to express their ideas. Cooke’s process is a reversal of this approach: informal, discarded debris dictates the form, and sometimes the content, of the work.

One of the Northwest’s most influential abstract painters, Judy Cooke has investigated abstract imagery and the structure of painting for over 30 years. A winner of the Oregon Arts Commission's Individual Artist Fellowship, the Flintridge Foundation Award for Visual Art, and a Visual Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Cooke has been based in Portland, OR since the late 1960s
