Cris Bruch
Gather and Wait

Sculpture
July 01 - August 28, 2010
In his studio Cris Bruch gathers all of the elements he needs to create work: physical materials, impressions, inspiration, and ideas, and then he waits. He spends time with these ingredients, pondering them, until ideas crystallize, and they begin to take physical form. Gather and Wait examines this process, and reflects Bruch’s approach to both art making and life. The three main components of the exhibition (large-scale sculpture, drawings, and photographs of the sculptures in process) explore physicality and chance, using improvisation as a guide for navigating the unlimited possibilities inherent in creating something, allowing materials and circumstances to determine the appearance and content of the finished product.

Seattle-based Bruch is well known for both his performance-based work, created in the 1980s, and his more recent process-oriented sculptural work, often presented in public settings. Bruch has received the Neddy Artist Fellowship, as well as the Betty Bowen Memorial Award, and in 2006 created a monumental outdoor sculpture for the Federal Courthouse in Eugene, OR.
