Shane McAdams | Some Thin and Precious Membranes

September 7 - 30, 2017
First Thursday Reception
: September 7, 6 - 8pm

For the exhibition Some Thin and Precious Membranes, Shane McAdams continues to expand the possibilities of landscape painting through his inventive techniques and conceptual considerations. For his new series, McAdams was interested in creating oppositions and the imaginary lines between seemingly disparate concepts. His resulting artworks masterfully combine divergent styles to create scenes where illusionistic space intersects with sublime landscapes.

In the work Bierstadt Estates (Flooded), McAdams strikes the perfect balance of tension and discovery. The artist references bucolic paintings of the mid-19th century Hudson School tradition, and further activates the scene with hypercolor light and flattened perspective. Rows of angled grey roofs that ascend and morph into the mountaintops exaggerate the vastness of the natural landscape, while bright bands of psychedelic rainbow light in the foreground appears like the reflection of water or a portal to another dimension.

Shane McAdams received his MFA from the Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) in 2004, and his work has been exhibited at the Marlborough Gallery (New York, NY), Pace Wildenstein Gallery (New York, NY) and Caren Golden Fine Art (New York, NY). He has been a regular contributor to The Brooklyn Rail since 2003.
