Jinie Park | A Pair: Two of the Same
November 7 - December 28, 2019
First Thursday Receptions:
November 7, 6 - 8 pm
December 5, 6 - 8 pm
Jinie Park’s new series features shaped canvases and luminously painted grids that connect to weblike, crocheted patternings. Her stitched-together, color stained artworks intersect with painting, weaving and sculpture. The exhibition title, A Pair: Two of the Same, hints at Park’s material “call and response” technique of visually mirroring painted shapes with gestural embroidered lines or minimalistic cut-outs of negative space.
In addition to layers of translucent acrylic paint, Park adds textile elements to allude to personal histories and memories of knitted sweaters, hats and clothing. In a triptych titled Sequences, 2019, woven threads cling to exposed areas of the frame’s wooden supports and embody the intimate physicality of Park’s intricate, handmade process.
Jinie Park received a BFA in painting at Seoul National University (Seoul, South Korea) and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, MD). Her work has been shown at the Kimsechonng Museum (Seoul, South Korea), the Louisiana Biennial Juried Exhibition, School of Design at Louisiana Tech University (Ruston, LA) and in a juried exhibition at Weiser Gallery, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA). Park was awarded an Individual Artist Award in Painting from the Maryland State Art Council, the Henry Walters Traveling Fellowship and the LeRoy E. Hoffberger Scholarship from the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 2016 Park received the Perez Art Museum Miami Picks Award during PULSE Miami Beach. Elizabeth Leach Gallery published a catalogue of her work in 2018.
