Elizabeth Leach Gallery is pleased to present Northwest painter Kavin Buck’s latest series of artworks that combine realism and abstraction through luscious hues and multilayered brushstrokes. Buck’s large-scale paintings transmit the atmospheric quality of seasonal weather shifts while his black and white artworks experiment with charcoal, graphite, and gesso mark-making.
Landscape painting is as vital today as ever and for many contemporary painters, the subject matter is a fundamental lens into how they see humanity's place in the world.

Buck relies on the abstract, the formal, the structural, to call out to the existential, in the hopes that stripes, color, and shape can speak to despair, joy, anxiety, and loss.

TAKING A CLOSER LOOK
In the 10-foot horizontal painting titled A Gentle Madness, 2020, ongoing investigations of line and color are especially evident. A thick vertical row of sun-bleached grassy lines reach toward a glowing saffron sky and transmit mystery beyond the surface of the painting. Buck's bisected composition further reiterates its meditative quality and invites viewers into the immense picture plane.
